Ageing and asset prices, August 2010
نویسنده
چکیده
The paper investigates how ageing will affect asset prices. A small model is used to show that economic and demographic factors drive asset, and in particular house, prices. These factors are estimated in a panel regression framework encompassing BIS real house price data from 22 advanced economies between 1970 and 2009. The estimates show that demographic factors affect real house prices significantly. Combining the results with UN population projections suggests that ageing will lower real house prices substantially over the next forty years. The headwind is around 80 basis points per annum in the United States and much stronger in Europe and Japan. Based on the analysis, global asset prices are likely to face substantial headwinds from ageing. JEL classification: G12; J11

متن کاملLife-Cycle Portfolio Choice, the Wealth Distribution and Asset Prices
In this paper we consider a canonical stochastic overlapping generations economy with sequentially complete markets. We examine how aggregate and individual shocks translate to changes in the distribution of wealth and how these movements in the wealth distribution affect asset prices and the interest rate. We show that effects are generally small if agents have identical beliefs but that diffe...

Meanwhile, having generally enjoyed low and stable prices since the early 2000s, most of the key economies in the world are now going through the final phase of a boom and bust cycle in asset (housing) prices based upon liquidity expansion, owing to sustained low interest rates and financial market innovations such as derivatives. In this regard, the argument may be put forward that monetary po...
متن کاملAsset Pricing Under Heterogeneous Information
In an asset market where agents have heterogeneous information, asset prices not only depend their expectations of the true fundamentals but also depend on their expectations of the expectations of others. Iterations of such expectations lead to the so-called “infinite regress” problem, which makes the analysis of asset pricing under heterogenous information challenging. In this paper, we solve...
متن کاملThe Fed's TRAP: A Taylor-type Rule with Asset Prices
This paper examines if US monetary policy responds to asset prices. Using real-time data we estimate a Taylor-type rule with an asset price variable. This variable refers to real estate prices, considering that those exhibit an important share in households’ asset portfolio. Moreover, especially real estate prices seem to have a close connection to monetary conditions. To analyze this link we d...
